Sleeping on watch

Foxy sleeping on watch

Our second leg to Santa Maria comes with mixed reviews.. periods of little wind, but mostly 16–18kts for the 3 days.

We were also dealing with a 6-8’ following sea but it was the occasional cross swell that made the trip like riding a mechanical bull except you had to ride this one for 2 days!

At one point it was pretty rough so we had to take in the spinnaker and run on main alone. Once the swell abated a little, and right before sunset, we again put up the Monster Blue spinnaker. I was going off watch so we agreed that if the current wind of 16-20kts built and sustained over 22kts, Jess would get me up and we’d put the spin away.

As it was, we flew the spin most of the of the night until we arrived at BSM.

Watch schedules went well. We’re getting sleep… just not great sleep.

Arriving in BSM was a little challenging as there were probably 75 boats already in the bay. We knew we were in violation of Capt Fatty’s rules of not entering an unknown bay at night, but.. the bay opening is probably 3 miles wide and besides… what’s the worst thing that can happen. (Famous last words)

We felt comfortable though as we followed other boats in as many of them have anchored there before. Turns out, when you see the bay in the morning, it’s huge.

It’s a great place to stop and the beaches were awesome. We could do without the 26-31kt wind in the evening though…

The Baja Ha Ha team put on a great beach party hosted by the local fishermen and their families. Plates of food for sale, cold beer and a live band that came in from La Paz.

Tomorrow, we start leg 3 leaving BSM and on to Cabo. It’s a 175nm, 2 day sail. On this leg we’ll pass through the Tropic of Cancer (now known as the Tropic of Topaz for some reason?… I don’t know I didn’t get the memo..) passing 23°26.1’N, we’ll show respect to tradition and douse ourselves with warm tropical water as we cross over the line!

  1. Thanks for the update and pictures. Has Foxy been sea-sick at all?
Fun going down wind all the way. You should turn around and go back upwind for an hour just to see what the return trip would be like…..or just keep going and never make the return trip!!
Keep the updates coming. We love them and live vicariously through you guys so even if we don’t respond, they are appreciated.

Foxy is handling it like a champ! No issues at all. She would even climb on the bed with one of us to pull the off watch.

No sea sickness… though relieving herself has been a challenge. Some of the seas were too rough to let her on the swim step. So we polled up the marine flooring near the aft gate and she went there.

We’re now in Cabo! I’ll post later about our calm last leg.
